About Tammy

Tammy has been involved with horses since she was born. She was fortunate to have been able to live on the family farm and have horses her whole life. She has close to 40 years experience in riding, training and caring for horses. Tammy combines her years of observing horses interacting with each other, many years of riding and working with horses, classical dressage training and natural horsemanship techniques into her training of the horses she works with.
Pratts Farm is currently home to 14 horses of varying ages, breeds, sizes and colors!

As a young girl, Tammy was always being asked by people in town to ride their horses. Because of that, she got lots of experience working with all kinds of horses. Even today as an adult, she is still a go to person for people in town if they need help training their horses or need guidance on buying or selling. Throughout her childhood and teenage years, Tammy was a "backyard" rider. She was involved with the local 4H club and attended the local shows. The family didn't have the money to buy a trailer and often times Tammy would ride her horse to the shows near town, show all day and then ride home. She collected many many ribbons throughout her years. Her first "real" horse was a buckskin Quarterhorse named Sundeck (Sunny). Tammy got Sunny when she was 10 yrs old and Sunny was 2. It was quite the challenge for Tammy and her mom to train Sunny. He was quite spooky and would often spook and run away, not looking where he was running. It was very scary at times. Even at shows in the warm up, he would spook and run away, running into other horses in his way....then he would go in the ring and win all his pleasure classes and the championship for the day. I am sure there were a lot of fellow riders that didn't appreciate that at all. After a vet check one spring, we found that Sunny was going blind in his left eye. Finally the spookiness made sense. One day, Tammy figured out how to stop Sunny from running away and the scary rides were a thing of the past and Tammy's confidence as a rider was renewed.....and a big step in learning how to train a horse had begun. Sunny was one of those small footed horses with not very desirable conformation and due to that and his blindness, Sunny wasn't going to be a jumper. What was the next step after winning at the local shows? Tammy discovered Dressage! After a year or so of trying this out by herself and going to some semi-successful local dressage shows, Tammy found a working student position with Sue Steinhof at Maplewood Farm in Berlin MA. That was in 1989, from then on she was hooked on dressage and that has been her focus ever since.

Tammy's goal for a long time has been to have her own training and breeding facility and to focus on that as a full time thing. That dream finally started to become a reality in 2002 when Tammy was layed off from her full time office job and decided to attempt to build her business. Picking up clients here and there part time and waiting for those right horses to come along. In 2005 she was able to build a new barn and things have started to grow since then. Tammy decided to create her own dressage partner and bred her half arab mare to a warmblood stallion named Olivier. AnaCapri was born in June of 2005, one month after her new barn was completed and the horses moved in. Sadly, Pri was orphaned at the age of 6 weeks old and Tammy was faced with the tragedy of losing her beloved mare and raising an orphan. Through Tammy's knowledge of horses and her diligence at sticking to a training program, Pri turned out just fine and has become a lovely mare who is easy to train and excited about learning as she tackles the job of becoming a dressage star! Tammy has room for two or three training horses at a time along with housing her small band of broodmares and foals for sale and a few regular boarders. Tammy and her boyfriend do all the work on the farm and care for all of the horses themselves. She is currently working with a client's 9 yr old Oldenburg stallion who is training at third level, her own 4 yr old filly Pri by Olivier and a client's 4 yr old filly by Donarweiss. Tammy plans to show the two young horses at training level this year and finally be able to apply to ride in some of those clinics that she audits instead of just sitting on the sidelines! Tammy backed both of the fillies as 3 yr olds during the summer of 2008 and looks forward to an exciting year with them in 2009.

When time and finances permit, Tammy chooses to train with Linda Parmenter in Hubbardston MA. Tammy met Linda while she was a working student at Maplewood. While at Maplewood, Tammy attended clinics with riders and trainers such as Sue Blinks and Jane Savoie. Tammy has also audited many clinics with renowned dressage riders and trainers such as Scott Hassler, Henk van Bergen, Robert Dover, Debbie MacDonald, Ingrid Kilmke, Klaus Balkenhol, Gerd Heuschmann and Frenk Jespers. She has also attended many "natural horsemanship" clinics with such names as John Lyons, Josh Lyons and Kenny Harlow. Tammy is an accomplished rider and trainer and has ridden and shown up through Prix St Georges level.

In 2006 Tammy was selected to ride in a NEDA clinic with Klaus Balkenhol and Dr. Gerd Heuschmann. Tammy rode a 3 yr old mare (Calista LBA) that she had in training that had only been backed 4 months earlier. Tammy was applauded by Klaus for her technique and training of this young horse.

Tammy's focus is on backing and training young horses with a focus on true classical Dressage but she has worked with all types and ages of horses and is always willing to help with any training situation you may have. Tammy also runs a small warmblood sport horse breeding program and believes that training with all horses starts from the day they are born. She strives to breed and train horses that have willing temperaments and are easy to train and handle and are safe to work around.
